Our answers…
1. What is the aim of the Prize?
The aim of this prize is to promote the use of hand embroidered surface embellishment within fashion, costume and interiors industries. We provide artists, students, practitioners and enthusiasts with a platform to connect with other industry bodies; in turn gaining exposure, improving embroidery techniques and keeping the age old tradition moving forward in the modern world.
2. Who can enter the Prize?
The Prize is open to any student who is in full or part time education on or after the 31st of March 2010, from any country in the world. Please note that research, and graduate students are also eligible to enter.
3. What are the Prizes?
The 1st 2nd and 3rd winners of the Prize will win:-
1 year free subscription to Embroidery magazine
- A commemorative framed hand embroidered plaque produced by Hand & Lock’s skilled craftsmen
- Work Experience and tambour course at the Hand & Lock workrooms in central London
- Free ticket for 1 to the Prize Giving location to be advised
First Prize
- $5000 USD
- Free membership to the Embroiderers’ Guild
- Dedicated page on the Hand & Lock website, with a biography
Second Prize
- $1000 USD
Third Prize
- $500 USD
Edward Green Shoe Category Prize
The winner will have their design bought to life by world famous designers Edward Green
- Travel and Accommodation for 1 Prize Giving at Hand & Lock London
Commendation
From time to time, the judges may award a commendation to the entrant, whom in their opinion meets the high standards of the 3 prize winners. Where this is the case the entrant will receive a commemorative framed hand embroidered plaque produced by Hand & Lock’s skilled craftsmen.
Special College Prize
Madeira UK Ltd will award $500 USD (retail value) worth of goods to the highest placed college or university to include the ‘Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery’ prize brief within their curriculum.

4. How do I register?
Visit here to register online. All online entrants must pay via debit cards, credit cards or paypal. Please ensure funds are available before registering.
You may also apply by post. Complete the entry form in full and return along with the entry fee to:

5. I have not received an email confirmation upon registration?
Please ensure that you check your junk mail box before emailing us with your registration queries. Towards the end of the competition we have a huge influx of entries so may be a bit delayed in our response.
6. How will I know if I have got through to the finalists round?
We will be judging 1st round Entries in July. We will send you an email to confirm your advancement in the contest. If you are unsuccessful in reaching the 2nd round we will contact you by email.
7. Do you have to live in the UK to enter?
Our contest is open to embroiderers, students and enthusiasts anywhere in the world. You can enter on the internet here.
8. Can you participate as a team?
The rules of the contest state can only accept one name per application, and the prizes are for one person only. You may enter as many submissions as you wish to improve your chances. To do this you will need to register again.
9. Where can I purchase the books in the suggested reading list?
The Complete Encyclopaedia of Needlework by Therese De Dillmont and the Art of the Embroiderer by Charles Germain De Saint-Aubin can be purchased from www.amazon.com.
