A Royal Commission

Hand & Lock were asked by Gieves and Hawkes No. 1 Savile Row to provide designs for a number of accoutrements and uniforms for the King of Tonga’s Coronation in August of 2008.

The Company’s Creative Director Carne Griffiths provided a series of sketches for approval, ranging from new army and naval cap badge patterns to full Diplomatic uniform embroidery; descending in Rank from first to fourth Class. The uniforms’ embroidery reflected the King’s desire to follow British regulations for Diplomatic uniform but were styled and altered sufficiently to give Tonga their own identity. Four sets of Boxed epaulettes were also designed and produced for the Coronation, a project which saw Hand & lock research their archives and develop a unique pattern for the King and his Aide’s Using techniques passed down through generations of the family run firm.

In all over 18 uniforms were embroidered for the King his Aide’s and distinguished guests of the Coronation providing a spectacular backdrop to this most prestigious event.
