One small corner of the textile industry has chosen to retain the working methods of the golden age of hand embroidery. In its self imposed time warp the London-based company Hand and Lock still works in much the same way as it did two hundred years ago, producing exquisite embroideries and military regalia entirely by hand.

The company’s roots go back to 1767 when Mr Hand set up as a goldlaceman, making a range of gold braids, lace, trimmings and cords. Hand was from a French Huguenot refugee family, and brought with him considerable technical expertise which gave him an advantage over his English competitors. Business flourished and by the 19th century the company was one of the leading providers of military embroidery and gold accoutrements, a role it continues to fulfil today.
