THE HAND & LOCK PRIZE FOR EMBROIDERY 2007 COMPETITION - CALL FOR ENTRIES.
The Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery 2007 is a prestigious, international, hand embroidery competition open to all students of embroidery, surface embellishment, fashion, soft furnishing, or textiles who are still in education.

The first prize is $10,000 USD
All three prize winners will receive free flights and 4 nights accommodation in Sydney, Australia, to attend the Hand & Lock 'Embroidering - The Future' Conference, and Embroidery Prize 2007 prize giving and champagne reception at the Powerhouse Museum.

Prizes include the opportunity to take up work experience, courses and tours from the competition's sponsors; The Royal School of Needlework, The London College of Fashion, The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Powerhouse Museum, The Embroiderers Guild, 'Embroidery' magazine, Marion Thomas Couture, and Everett & Son Accountants, as well as a special College Prize from Madeira UK Ltd, all whose calibre reflects the quality of the competition.

The call for entries is to be announced on the Hand & Lock website www.handembroidery.com and be mailed to the Heads of Department at all major colleges and universities in October 2006.

" Entry form submission is by March 31st 2007, with first stage submission of entrants work by photographic images by June 30th 2007.
" Those who are successful and go through to the second stage are then required to submit actual work by August 15th 2007.

The aim of the competition is to encourage a new generation of young embroiderers and designers to create contemporary design, and fresh approaches for embroidery, that can be matched up with the high quality and expertise expected at professional, commercial levels. Also to promote the use of hand embroidered surface embellishment within the design and manufacturing industries.
" The brief is written by the London College of Fashion, and is entitled 'Ecclesiastical '.
" Entrants are required to present designs and samples of hand embroidery.
" It seeks original and creative ideas, innovative design and use of materials.
" The finished product must be both practical and commercially viable.
" The work must include hand embroidery.
" All work must be backed up by supporting sketches/idea sheets, with notes that explain the thinking and ideas behind the concept.
" The judges must be able to easily see the design development from initial concept through to realised design.

First Prize Winner -Heidi Turner studying BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface, at Cleveland College of Art & Design.
Second Prize -Sophie Tilbury studying BA Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art & Design
Third Prize - Natalie Benmayor studying BA (Hons) Fashion at Kingston University.
