The 2009 Prize for Embroidery goes to….

On Friday 4th September, as the day went by, the pressure increased. The panel of professionals gathered by Hand & Lock to judge the ‘2009 Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery‘ had to take tough decisions. They evaluated each of the 24 entries based on the following criteria:
- Interpretation of the brief and overall impact | 50
- Design development |15
- Technique | 10
- Materials |10
- Presentation |10
- Commercial viability |5
At the end of the day, and after all marks have been added, our panel reached their decision. The winners of the 2009 Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery are:
- Student category:
- 1st Beatrice Newman, De Montfort University (090)
- 2nd Aisling Egan, National College of Art & Design Dublin (132)
- 3rd Claire Goodwin, Nottingham Trent University (226)
- Commendation Marian Toledo,Central St Martins College of Art & Design (070)
- Open category:
- 1st Lucie Bourreau, France (164)
- 2nd Renee Lindell, United Kingdom (187)
- 3rd Yumiko Komai, Japan (056)
- Commendation Theresa Alexander, USA (189)
- Special Prizes:
Our congratulations also to Karen Torrisi (088) who will be awarded the Australian prize; Karen entered the Open category. To Claire Goodwin, who also won the Swarovski Prize in addition to the 3rd Prize in the Student category. Claire entry was selected by Swarovski representative: Michelle Hyams. This year, the Madeira Prize goes to Nottingham Trent University. This Prize rewards $1700 USD to the college or university that had included the Hand & Lock Prize in its curriculum and reached the highest results in the overall prize.
You’ll be able to see all the finalists’ work at the Fashion Show which is being run in conjunction with Hand & Locks 3rd. International Conference and Prize Giving to be held at Glasgow Caledonian University on Saturday 31st. October 2009.
